There are no shops or houses down there; it’s all wilderness. The beach is scattered with white rocks of various shapes - thousands of fossils and corals brought onshore by the tsunami of 2004. Secret Beach is magnificent at night too, when you can gaze at the starry sky and observe hundreds of big hermit crabs crawling on the sand in search of the perfect rock to rest upon. You can also spot huge bats in the sky over your head, totally uninterested in you, but beautiful and graceful, playing in the reach the Secret Beach also known as Sunset Beach, you need to find a path between the bushes, on the right side of the road going from Long Beach to the island’s viewpoint. It takes 10 minutes to hike down from the main road to Secret Connect ExperienceVisit Pulau Wehs town and marketA 30-minute ride with stunning views of the sea and the coast, the road connecting Iboih Beach to downtown Sabang is a little adventure by itself. The road crosses jungles with majestic trees, and at one big turn, you’ll meet the local monkeys waiting for the fruit to snack on - or to steal! I would never stop there, they come too close and are aggressive! In fact, Weh Island’s monkeys are more aggressive than the ones you meet in other places in Indonesia, like the Monkey Forest in Ubud. On the way to downtown Sabang, you'll find locals selling fruit, several small restaurants that you might want to stop and check out, and a few mosques. In Sabang itself, you'll find a fruit market with all the papaya and the fish that you’ll ever need to be happy. The town/market vibe will please you for sure, after a few days spent on the beach. The path to the waterfall is on the right side of the road, exactly where it crosses a creek. It's about a 20-minute hike and easy enough that you can do it wearing sandals. It’s always wise to be out of the jungle before sunset...Swim to Rubia IslandAnother solo traveler and I were having breakfast time sitting on the porch at Norma's bungalows and enjoying juicy papaya. We were curious about the tiny, picturesque island just in front of us, opposite the Iboih Beach. I'm not the bravest when it comes to swimming in deep water... unless I'm diving! But that morning I challenged myself and had the most satisfying swim of my life so far!It took us 20 minutes with fins and mask to get to Rubia, crossing the channel that separates the two shores, at regular speed, not too fast, not too slow. It was the best morning exercise. Once we had gotten to Rubia, we explored the islet and said hi to the people at the only restaurant. They recommended snorkelling around the rocks at the back of the island, and we spotted an octopus! We were the only two travellers on the little island. It felt really special. This is only for fit swimmers that don't mind swimming for half an hour, otherwise you can also hire a boat. There is at least one staff in each room, and they will provide commentaries about the rooms. Emmalyn, Gabriel, Emy, and Ryan were knowledgeable and able to answer most Hall itself has rich history other than its significance in representing the British Monarch in Canada. HOWTO GET TO WEH ISLAND Pulau Weh is accessible with a ferry from the city of Banda Aceh in Sumatra, which holds an international airport.

Pulau Weh is a hilly volcanic island, sitting peacefully at the top of northern Sumatra. It’s just a short boat ride from Banda Aceh. The island is a true paradise, both above and below sea level. The most popular villages on Pulau Weh have a laid-back backpackers vibe. It’s a perfect paradise to relax and have a good time away from it all. Pulau weh is volcanic, the hills are lush green, the views are breathtaking, the beaches are sugary white and the sea is crystal clear. Bring your flip-flops, sunblock, a good book and prepare to snooze in a hammock by the sea if you’re not spending all of your time underwater. Do note that Pulau Weh is no party island. There is no nightclub and alcohol is difficult to get by as it is strictly forbidden in the Aceh area of Sumatra. Getting to Pulau Weh From Banda Aceh From Banda Aceh you will need to travel 40 kilometers to get to the Ulue-lue port. From here you can catch the ferry to Pulau Weh. The fast ferry leaves two times a day at and 4 pm. It takes around 1 hour and costs Rp 80,000 for an economy class ticket. The regular ticket is a bit more expensive. Alternatively you can also take the slow ferry. This leaves at 8 am and 2 pm and takes 2,5 hours. It costs Rp 25,000. All boats arrive at Balohan Port. From here, you can take a motorbike taxi or a Becak to your destination on the island. Flying to Sabang Sabang is the main city of Pulau Weh. It has its own airport these days making it very easy to access the island. Garuda Indonesia and Wings Air both operate flights to the airport from Medan. You can get connecting flights to Sabang from most parts of Indonesia. Island Destinations Sabang is the main city of Pulau Weh, but there is not much to see here. Most travelers head towards one of the backpacker villages around the coast. The most popular tourist destinations are Iboih, Gapang and Sumur Tiga. Iboih Iboih beach is the most popular place among backpackers, located on the west side of the island. This is the place where I stayed at a few years ago. In those days, I didn’t dare to drive a motorbike yet, so I didn’t see as much of Pulau Weh as I could have but I absolutely loved hanging around in this sleepy village, gazing over the azure blue and exploring the marine life. Iboih has got lots of guesthouses and charming oceanfront restaurants. Gapang Gapang is a smaller and quieter place to stay on the island and it is home to a beautiful beach. From here, you can walk to Balek Gunung where you can see flying foxes, visit waterfalls and do jungle trekkings. At Gapang beach there are, apart from some simple beach huts, also more luxurious bungalows to stay at, with air-conditioning and a hot shower, and you can even opt to stay in one of the resorts if you want to splurge. Sumur Tiga This unspoiled tropical beach is located on the east coast of Pulau Weh, just a 15-minute drive from Balohan Port. The ambiance is quiet and peaceful and the beach of Sumur Tiga is the best place to watch the enchanting sunrise in the early hours of the morning. Where to Stay On Pulau Weh There’s a lot of choice for accommodation on Pulau Weh. Most of the accommodation is targeted at backpackers. The hotels range from simple huts by the beach through to mid-range bungalows and small time resorts. Regardless of what you choose you can almost guarantee a beautiful view. If you’re on a budget it’s easy to find something suitable to your needs when you arrive as most backpackers huts don’t advertise online. For mid-range accommodation I’d recommend the eco-friendly Treetop Guesthouse. Another nice option for this budget range is Freddies Santai Sumurtiga and Pulau Weh Resort, both come highly recommended and offer bungalows by the beach. At the top end you have the dive resorts which offer diving facilities and luxury bungalows. Lumba Lumba Diving is a popular diving school in Gapang and Iboih Diving Center is a highly-rated dive school in Iboih. Both offer packages with on site accommodation in nice bungalows. Things to do On Pulau Weh Pulau Weh will steal the hearts of those travelers who appreciate nature. It’s the kind of place where you can get away from the crowds and the party scene. The island offers beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, untouched nature and some of the best marine life in all of Indonesia. Here are some great things to do on Pulau Weh; Enjoy the Beaches The obvious thing to do when you arrive on Pulau Weh is to just lie back and enjoy the beach! The island is the perfect place to soak up the tropical ambiance. Just lie around in a hammock, sip a young coconut, swim a little and relax. I promise after a few days you will continue your travels rejuvenated! Diving and Snorkeling Most travellers come to Pulau Weh for the underwater life it is truly amazing! In fact, Pulau Weh was the first place I snorkelled in Indonesia. I was stunned by the diversity of the wildlife. You can see whale sharks, manta rays, turtles, barracuda, stingrays, dolphins and much more. The ocean at Iboih is home to the Rubiah Island Sea Garden. You will start at the southern end and the current takes you gently to the northern end. You can go snorkelling just right off of shore and you can also hire a boat to go on a snorkeling trip, bringing you to the best spots. If you are a dive addict you will not be disappointed. Diving is affordable compared to most places in Indonesia. There are 20 dive spots to choose from and they are suitable for a range of levels. Some spots have very strong drift dives and deep decompression dives, only suitable for experienced divers. Explore the island by motorbike. If you have driving a motorbike before, don’t miss out on renting one here so you can go explore. The island has three well-paved main roads, making it easy to find your way. It takes around 2 hours to get from one side to the other. On the way, you will be treated to empty winding roads, amazing views, and raw untouched landscape. If you take a ride around the island I recommend stopping to take a photo at the Kilometer Zero Indonesia Monument. This is the most western tip of the country where Indonesia begins. It’s also worth checking out Jaboi Volcano Crater wander through the volcanic landscape of yellow rocks. A motorbike should cost Rp 100,000 a day. Jungle trek to Gunung Keris Gunung Keris is the highest peak on Pulau Weh Island. On a trek through the nature reserve you’ll see lots of birds and butterflies. It’s a nice trek and you get some good views of the island on the hike. If you want a half day adventure then get your hiking shoes on and go! Eating Options Don’t expect any high-end cuisine on Pulau Weh. Most guesthouses and cafés located in the popular tourist villages serve simple Indonesian and western food. The best dishes are normally the local ones. The locals know how to make a good Nasi Goreng but when it comes to pizza, I’m not sure 🙂 Final Thoughts Pulau Weh is one of the highlights of Aceh. I’d definitely recommend visiting Pulau Weh if you have the chance. You’re sure to enjoy the diving, the beaches and the laid back lifestyle. Now we were really looking forward to diving Pulau Weh!The driver was also happy to stop at this particular lookout spotIsland viewpoints don’t get much better than this!Riding in the becak was also super fun!Forget the bemos – bargain hard & grab a becak from the ferry terminal to Iboih for 60,000 IDRThe becak drops you off at the start of Iboih village – it’s a cramped, busy space of cars, restaurants & souvenir becak will drop you off here, at the start of Iboih villagePulau Weh AccommodationHead onwards & upwards to start your Pulau Weh accommodation are a mix of budget & really budget places, ending with the most comfortable/expensive bungalows at Yulia’s at the very end of the path – find about more about accommodation later in the first impressions of Pulau Weh were far away from the tourist beaches of Kuta & Nusa Lembongan in Bali and the Gili Islands in Lombok, we were expecting empty, sandy beaches & cute beachfront shacks. Instead, Iboih was a hot jungle accommodations were spaced apart & only 100m from the water – this would be awesome if you could jump straight into the water but the village is built-up & THERE IS NO SAND!So there’s nowhere you can really swim or even relax by the water…There’s no real beach on Iboih but the views are niceWhat to Expect on Pulau WehBeing in the jungle, there are also trees, roots, leaves scattered everywhere, along with humidity & not all so bad, not at all, just very different from what we expected – these are the good pointsThe water is clear, calm & blue, with good conditions for snorkeling & diving Pulau WehThe local people are friendly & unobtrusive. No-one is pushy & trying to sell you things all the time, like almost everywhere else in IndonesiaIt’s a Muslim village & there are signs up to cover-up when you go into the main “town”. Kilometer 0 is marked by a big sign – don’t forget to do as the locals do & snap a selfie!Kilometer 0 – we’ll spare you the selfie versionLong BeachThe best spot for swimming on the island is at Long Beach, a 4km walk north of Iboih – again, you could visit by renting a an easy walk though & good exercise after a few days beach bumming. Along the way you’ll pass a durian farm 1km in from the main road which you may be able to there are fancy resorts & luxury accommodation. There’s also a famed Italian restaurant named “Bixio Café”, right on the beach but when we were there in the low season, it was beach is nice, walk out onto the jetty & jump in from there – if you dare to brave the jellyfish. When we were there, there were just too many of them – DIY Travel HQ 0, Jellyifish of jellyfish among gorgonian fans during our dive in Batee Tokong too!Diving Pulau WehSituated at the most Northerly point in Indonesia, where the Indian Ocean meets the Andaman Sea, Pulau Weh promises world-class diving – & little-known & off the beaten track so the waters remain quite pristine & unspoiled, even in spite of the Boxing Day Tsunami in fish & friends under the seaOn Iboih, there are 2 main dive companiesRubiah Tirta DiversRubiah Tirta were the 1st dive operators on Pulau Weh. They have a huge dive shop of the seafront, which always seemed to be busy – it’s the diving hub of signed up for a couple of dives with them the day before, but on the morning, we found them extremely names weren’t on any lists & everyone seemed to be running around with their heads cut off. The wetsuits we were given were old, worn & had holes in they were like this above water, what would they be like under water? I’m sure it would’ve been fine but we had absolutely no confidence in them & quickly cancelled our Tirta dive centreIboih Dive CenterWe then moved on to Iboih Dive Center & came across a totally different ambiance – it was quiet & were a lot of locals/workers around the shop but no we chatted with the dive master & found him very experienced, knowledgeable & trustworthy. We discussed the dive sites we were interested in & arranged a dive there on the Dive Center is new on the diving Pulau Weh scene so all their equipment, including wetsuits, are new or in excellent Dive CentrePulau Weh Dive Sites Batee TokongHeading out on the water, it was just Erik & I, the dive master & the didn’t go very far from Iboih beach to reach our site. 20 minutes by boat & we were at Batee Tokong, the most popular spot for diving Pulau Fish spotted on Batee Tokong diveBatee Tokong is known for its amazing scenery & rich marine life, especially moray descended down a shallow wall & immediately we saw many different types of moray around a giant gorgonian sea Eel SwimmingThis was a highlight of the dive along with seeing many varieties of trevallies, dartfishes & water was very warm, 29 degrees Celsius, & the visibility was around current was quite strong but I’m a newbie & it was fine – however, I don’t think I know any different after diving on Komodo Island straight after getting my PADI Open Water certification on Gili Air!Swimming with turtles!Fun Dives, Courses & Prices on IboihSingle dives are offered from 21-23 Euros or 320,000-340,000 more dives you do, the cheaper it Weh is also a popular place to take PADI dive courses. If you arrive in Banda Aceh before 1430 you can connect to the last 1600 express bahari ferry and be at Lumba Lumba by evening. Everything later than arriving in Banda Aceh after 1430 means an overnight stay in the Pulau Weh to Banda Aceh It is not possible to connect to a flight before 1100. This means you have to leave us the afternoon before and have an overnight stay in Banda Aceh. By taking a plane starting at 1100 you can connect with the first 800 express bahari visitors can get a Visa on Arrival for a maximum 30 days visit, which you can also get as a one time 30 days extendable there is the option of a so called Visit Visa which gives you 60 days and is two times for 60 days each extendable. You have to apply for a Visit Visa before entering Indonesia and you need a sponsor at the place where you want to stay and do the extensions.
